Former Reserve Bank Governor Dalitso Kabambe has officially joined the UTM party, citing the party’s manifesto as the reason for his decision.
“I think the UTM manifesto resonates with the needs of Malawi. The party, like other political parties, wants to create a lot of jobs. So, I think it is the right party to move this country forward,” Kabembe said at a rally at Masambanjati Square in Thyolo.

Kabembe, who recently quit the Democratic Progressive Party, said he decided to join UTM after consulting with his family and analysing the constitutions and manifestos of different political parties.
UTM secretary general Patricia Kaliati welcomed Kabambe to the party, saying: “The door to exit is closed, but the party is open to all who want to join.”

Kaliati also denied claims of an internal feud within the party, saying: “For us, we are just thankful to President Lazarus Chakwera for choosing our party chairman, Michael Usi, as the national vice president. We are not fighting for UTM.”
Kabembe’s joining of UTM is seen as a major boost to the party, which has been facing challenges since the death of its founding chairman, Saulos Chilima.
With Kabambe on board, UTM is poised to continue its mission of creating jobs and moving Malawi forward.
