Honiara City Council (HCC) enforcement officers have carried out a massive demolition operation targeting illegal markets in the city.
The operation, which was carried out recently, included the demolition of betel nut markets in Mamana Waters, Fiji Quarter and White River 01 Bus Station.
Director General of the Law Enforcement Directorate, Robert Madeo, stressed that his department was committed to maintaining order and legality in Honiara.
“Our operations are aimed at ensuring the city remains clean and safe for all residents. We will continue to crack down on and dismantle illegal markets on the streets of Honiara,” he said.
He also thanked the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and its Central Response Unit (CRU) team for assisting law enforcement officers during the operation.

Market stalls burned down by HCC officials
The recent demolitions are part of HCC’s broader strategy to address the proliferation of illegal markets, a long-standing problem in the city. These markets are often overcrowded, have unsanitary conditions, are prone to criminal activity and pose a threat to public health and safety.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas have been urged to cooperate with enforcement efforts. Madio reiterated that there are designated areas for market activities and encouraged vendors to utilize these spaces to avoid chaos and possible penalties in the future.

The Housing and Urban-Rural Development Commission’s stance on illegal markets reflects broader efforts to strengthen urban management and ensure public spaces are used appropriately.
As the city continues to grow, the City Council takes proactive measures to create a more organized and liveable environment for residents.
The ongoing actions by law enforcement agencies demonstrate a firm attitude towards city governance and emphasize the importance of compliance with city regulations.
Further demolitions are expected as HCC steps up its efforts to clean up the city and promote healthier, safer communities.
