Harris accepts Democratic presidential nomination
Harris thus becomes the first non-white woman to run for such a high office.
Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination to run in the Nov. 5 presidential election against former Republican President Donald Trump after independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy dropped his support for the former president. Her acceptance speech also featured performances by Democratic supporters Stevie Wonder, John Legend and Pink.
Harris thus becomes the first non-white woman to run for such a high office. In her acceptance speech at the party convention in Chicago, Harris outlined her plans to focus on unity, justice and inclusion, and her multicultural background will play an important role. Her mother is a cancer researcher from India and her father is an economist from Jamaica.
“I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me,” she said. “I am determined to keep working to make America a place where everyone can thrive,” said Harris, who started out as a prosecutor in California and served as attorney general. In 2016, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, and in 2020, she became the first nonwhite woman and first person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president.
Harris’ campaign has diverged from Trump’s on a number of issues, from civil liberties to climate change. She also supports a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and protections for asylum seekers. “We are a nation of immigrants,” Harris stressed. “Our diversity is our strength,” she added.
The Trump camp rebuked Harris for wanting to open borders, raise taxes and release criminals, and Robert Kennedy also pointed out that most speakers at the Democratic National Convention pointed the finger at Trump instead of putting forward their own proposals.
Trump once said: “Kamala Harris is the most liberal member of the Senate. She wants to defund the police, raise taxes and take your guns away.”
In response to Venezuela’s recent controversial elections, Harris wrote a letter to opposition leaders Edmundo González Urrutia and María Corina Machado in which she strongly defended the “democratic values” represented by the Unitarian Democratic Platform (PUD).
“It gives us more strength to know that we are not alone. We Venezuelans are more united than ever. Thank you Kamala Harris for defending the democratic values that are the spirit of our victory. Venezuela will be free. Our families will come home,” Urrutia and Machado responded.
In the letter, Harris also urged Venezuelan law enforcement to protect citizens from “threats and political attacks,” while calling on local electoral authorities to produce minutes certifying Nicolás Maduro’s victory on July 28, as announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
Harris also demanded the “highest transparency” from Venezuela’s Central Committee and pledged that the United States will continue to “encourage discussions among all parties in Venezuela on a respectful and peaceful transfer of power.”
