Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike on the Iranian capital of Tehran, it was announced on Wednesday.
The group announced that Haniyeh, who was killed before dawn, had traveled to Tehran to attend the birthday of Iran’s new president.
Hamas said in a statement on its Telegram page that its political leader Haniyeh was killed at a residence in Tehran.
Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the Hamas leader was killed in an overnight airstrike. However, no details were immediately available about the murder. Ayatollah Khamenei reportedly said “we will avenge Haniyeh’s murder” and said Israel should “be prepared for severe punishment.”
There was no immediate comment from Israel on the killing.
“We knew nothing about this killing,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in Singapore. “We had no hand in it,” he said. He said he did not want to speculate on the impact of the killing on Israel’s Gaza ceasefire talks.
However, Blinken noted that the incident made the ceasefire agreement even more important to end the suffering of Palestinian civilians and release the large number of remaining hostages.
