The Special Operations Group, in partnership with the Gros Islet Police Department, conducted routine security operations during the Gros Islet J’ouvert celebrations at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024. These operations resulted in the recovery of a stolen weapon and the arrest of three men.

During the celebrations, police spotted a suspicious person, later identified as Gurshan James, 23, of Rosehill, Castries. A search of him revealed a stolen pistol with an automatic trigger, a magazine and 26 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Gurshan James was subsequently charged with handling stolen goods, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. He applied for bail in the District Court but was remanded in custody at Bordeaux Correctional Facility.

Additionally, police arrested Stephenson Charles, 28, from Monchy, Gros Islet, on a warrant for failure to comply with a court order. In 2022, Charles was convicted of possession of a firearm and fined EC$30,000. Following his arrest, he was taken to the Bordeaux Correctional Facility to serve his sentence for failure to comply with an order.

The third arrest is related to an ongoing investigation by the Castries Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into a report of aggravated assault. Officers arrested 26-year-old Jamal Paul, also known as Brace, of Ciceron, Castries, and charged him with aggravated assault. At the time of his arrest, Paul was on bail awaiting trial on a previous aggravated assault charge. His bail application was denied and he is being held at the Bordeaux Correctional Facility.
