Guatemala won the CONCACAF Futsal World Cup Qualifiers and three tickets to the 2008 World Cup in Brazil on Sunday after a thrilling final draw with Cuba 3-3 and a 5-3 penalty shootout victory. The locals were perfect in the shootout, with five kickers, including the protagonist of the game, goalkeeper Carlos Merida, scoring at the El Domo Sports Center in the southern suburbs of the Guatemalan capital. Meanwhile, Cuba made a mistake, paradoxically, with Eduardo Morales, the team’s top scorer and the tournament’s top scorer, missing a penalty after his three compatriots beat Merida.
Guatemala and Cuba beat the United States and Panama respectively in Saturday’s semifinals to secure their tickets to the World Cup. The United States also secured its spot in Brazil by beating Panama 7-1 in the third-place match on Sunday.
