Government strategy explained for maintaining national road network

Libreville, Wednesday, June 26, 2024 (Infos Gabon) – The Minister of Public Works, General Flavien Nzengui Nzoundou, discussed last Wednesday in the National Assembly the maintenance of the national road network and the upgrading of unpainted departmental roads.

Given the situation that Gabon’s roads are currently facing due to the lack of a significant maintenance budget and the fact that the materials and machines allocated to the public works sector are not updated, the minister quickly reacted by developing a strategy for the period 2024-2025.

He explained that, thanks to the help of the transitional president, General Brice Clotaire Origi Nguema, his department had purchased 30 new pieces of civil engineering equipment and would continue to do so, not only to re-equip the territorial forces but also to deploy buffer groups, including one currently being deployed on the Alembé-Lopé-Mikouyi axis, 308 km.

He also said that the rehabilitation program of several dirt roads is still going on, a work carried out by small and medium-sized enterprises with funding from the Autonomous National Road Maintenance Fund (FANER). “The current program affects more than 1,000 kilometers of dirt roads, while the three-year program, which will be extended until 2026, affects nearly 2,600 kilometers of dirt roads,” he explained.

General Flavien Nzengui Nzoundou presented another plan to the transition representatives, which includes replacing wooden bridges with metal ones, thanks to funding from the Institutional Transition and Rehabilitation Commission (CTRI). The materials related to the construction of these metal bridges, valued at 2 billion CFA francs, were provided by external partners and are currently located at the port of Owendo.

Let us recall that the Minister of Public Works therefore appeared before the National Assembly to respond to the concerns of His Excellency Jean Bosco Njonga regarding the strategy developed by the Transitional Government regarding the maintenance of the national road network and its efficiency.
