– Prime Minister Phillips assured
The Prime Minister, retired Brigadier General Mark Phillips, held an impromptu meeting with key stakeholders at the Watooka Guest House in Linden to discuss the severe flooding in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Babys).
During that meeting, he assured local and regional entities of the government’s willingness to cooperate and provide support to address the ongoing flooding issues in the region.
Stakeholders present at the meeting included representatives such as opposition councillor Jermaine Figuera, Linden Town Council secretary Lennox Gasper and others.
Prime Minister Phillips said it was vital to put aside political differences and work together to meet current challenges.
He also stressed the urgency of repairing critical infrastructure, including clearing and unclogging all drainage systems in the area, especially around towns.
“Let us develop a comprehensive plan by this formed committee, the town councils and the district democratic committees; these are the things we must move forward with and the government will support you,” the prime minister said.
Speaking about the lack of preparedness of local authorities for the rainy season, Prime Minister Phillips stressed that the government should play a facilitating role at the central government level and provide the necessary resources according to regional requests.
“The central, regional and local governments must work together. If the private sector or stakeholders want to join, no problem. The focus is on preparing the infrastructure,” he stressed.
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Sonia Parag and stakeholders also plan to hold meetings to further discuss the issues and collaborate on finding effective solutions.
Finally, Figueira thanked the Prime Minister for convening this meeting and assured that the issues discussed will be referred to the Regional Disaster Committee for further action and follow-up. (Information Department)
