Kenya’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) has officially ended a month-long fishing ban, reopening the area to artisanal fishermen.

The closure was implemented to address the depletion of fish stocks and support their recovery. The symbolic reopening took place at Akprabanya Beach in the Adasi District of the Greater Accra Region, where artisanal and offshore fleets were welcomed.

At the event on Thursday, August 1, Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson announced the resumption of fishing activities and urged all concerned to commit to protecting Ghana’s marine resources.

“The fishing closure is a strategy adopted by the Department of Fisheries and the Fisheries Board to help recover overexploited fish stocks, rebuild depleted fish species and reduce fishing pressure on these stocks,” she said.

“I urge the people of Upper Manya, west of the Adda River, to continue their efforts to protect our precious marine resources. May this season’s catch be plentiful and the fisheries and aquaculture industries prosper,” she added.
