By Denis Chabrol (Demerara Waves) Senior officials in the Guyana government were on Friday furious that detectives from the Guyana Police Force had taken a laptop belonging to Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd containing confidential and sensitive information that they had assigned to him as part of their investigation into allegations of cybercrime against his executive assistant.
Accused diplomat Sharmayne Balram has sent a lawyer’s letter to former government minister Nigel Dharamlall, whose complaint to police apparently triggered the investigation, including her arrest and seizure of equipment in her possession. On Friday 2 August, lawyer Everton Singh-Lammy warned Mr Dharamlall that legal action would be taken against him if he did not cease actions that could prejudice the investigation. Mr Singh-Lammy told Mr Dharamlall that “his actions may amount to conspiracy to facilitate the conviction of an innocent person and this has tarnished my client’s reputation.” The lawyer denied that Ms Balram had acted on or off social media to discredit Mr Dharamlall and said his client would seek an apology from him after the police investigation hopefully cleared her of any wrongdoing.
The lawyer pointed out that a few weeks ago, Ms. Balram had reported to the Information Systems Department of the Ministry of External Affairs about unusual activities taking place in her social media accounts and professional email accounts, which could lead to the information or these accounts being compromised. The lawyer said that the report was filed before Mr. Dharam Lal informed her of her “involvement”. He said a police report was also filed in the matter.
