Metro journalist wins national journalism award – Metro Puerto Rico

The Metro Puerto Rico team of journalists was honored Saturday at the Puerto Rico Journalists Association’s XXX Awards ceremony in recognition of their collective multimedia coverage of last June’s electoral primaries.

The jury awarded the National Journalism Award in the category of “Current News/Multimedia” to reporters from the Puerto Rico Metropolitan Area. In their award, the jury cited the team’s extensive and detailed work, “balanced and sustained coverage of Puerto Rico’s complex primary election.” They highlighted the variety of voices and digital elements used in the special report.

Aiola Virella, editor-in-chief of Metro Puerto Rico, received the award along with Fernando Collazo, editor of Metro.PR, and Paola Rodríguez, deputy editor-in-chief of the portal. As well as the journalists responsible for the coverage of the day of the primary elections: Nilda Núñez Lambay, Adriana Santa and Joaquín Rosado. Also online journalists Ana Sofia Rivera and Fabiana Delpin.

According to ASPPRO President Nydia Bauzá, the competition celebrates its 30th anniversary of excellence in journalism, with a jury made up of a group of renowned senior journalists who selected the best works published in the written press, radio/podcasts, multimedia and television, with five categories: current affairs, interviews, special reports, chronicles and investigative reports.

“As we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of this prestigious event, we see in each award a journalist committed to the highest ethical standards of the profession. Tonight’s awards reaffirm the values ​​of good journalism, oversight and the pursuit of transparency to the benefit of the country,” said Bauza.

ASPPRO rewards excellence in journalism published in the written press, radio/podcasts, multimedia and television, in five categories: Current Affairs, Interviews, Special Reports, Chronicles and Investigative Reports. The jury, chaired by Isadora Hernández, was composed of Amarilys Ortiz Medina, Marisellie Ortiz Nieves and Maricelis Rivera Santos in the written press; Sandra Villerrael, Mario Alegre Barrios and Nelson Gabriel Berríos in the radio/podcasts; Proviana Colón Diaz, Aurora Rivera and Rafi Matos in the multimedia; and Rosita Marrero, Otilio González and Annette Álvarez in the television.

Bauzá explained that this year’s award is part of a special collaboration with the company Cemex. Puerto Rican engineer/craftsman Armando Rivera designed an original piece made especially for the award ceremony. The award includes an engraving of the Puerto Rican flag made from Ponce cement, the only cement made in Puerto Rico. The president explained that the solid concrete block is not only an award, but also a A symbol of journalistic steadfastness and integrity.
