Gimbi installs safe waste management system

A safe waste management system has been established and commissioned in Kinby. The waste and resource management system was inaugurated by the Minister of Environment and Security, Tariq Ibrahim.

The safe waste management system was established under the government’s ‘My Clean Sri Lanka’ programme, which is funded by the Dhivehi State Budget and a World Bank grant.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Tariq Ibrahim said the system will become a safe waste and resource management center. The minister said that the village has set up a system to separate and manage different types of garbage. The minister said that a safe and comfortable environment has been created for all employees working in waste management.

The minister expressed hope that with the establishment of this system, Kimbidu’s garbage problem will be solved and great progress will be made in protecting the village’s environment. He said the project will also improve the cleanliness of the village and enhance the quality of life of the people.

“The system will enable the village council to segregate and robustly manage daily waste generated in the village. These facilities will also promote waste monetization and provide a sustainable solution to the waste problem,” he said.

Ali Hussain, the chairman of the council, told TH in an interview with PSN News that with the installation of a waste management system by the Jinmei Municipality, the dumping of garbage on the beach in the village will now stop completely. Ali Hussain said the facility set up in the village now facilitates the production of cardboard from the food waste generated in the village.

“This will enable us to make a profit by selling the waste from the kitchen bins that Kimbidu currently uses on a daily basis,” said council chairman Ali Hussain.

The Department of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has also provided modern machinery and equipment to carry out waste management in the most efficient manner. These include multifunctional baling machines, card making machines, glass crushing machines and various sizes of waste bins.

In addition, the ministry said it has provided staff safety equipment and waste management equipment. A vehicle for collecting garbage from households, businesses and institutions has also been handed over to the commission.

The ministry said a biological waste treatment system has been installed that can process 200 kg of putrescible waste per day. The ministry said it would produce raw compost in just 15 minutes and fully mature sugarcane in 10 days.

The Ministry of Environment said that about 65% of the garbage generated in rural areas is perishable and the system will have a positive impact on health and social conditions in the villages. The ministry said that if the project is successful, it will help to launch similar projects in other villages. The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy said that this is an important step in the efforts to solve the waste problems facing the whole country.
