Speaking at the Minsk Forum on November 17, German Vice Chancellor and Federal Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said European politicians remain skeptical about Belarus’ respect for human rights.
Gabriel stressed that Belarus and Germany have had limited contacts for many years both at the bilateral level and at the level of interaction with the EU, and “trust must be rebuilt between us,” he wrote. Bella Pan.
As a step towards achieving this goal, the minister mentioned the ongoing activities of the Belarus-EU Coordination Group.
The diplomat also stressed the special role of increasing mobility between the parties and praised Belarus’ decision to provide a five-day visa-free regime for citizens of many countries, including EU countries.
“Mobility is a very important point. Students, young people, representatives of the economic sphere and culture – this is especially important for them,” Gabriel stresses.
The Deputy Chancellor stated that Germany supports Belarus’ path to reconciliation with the EU.
“But, of course, we need a signal of confidence,” he added.
The German Foreign Minister stressed that European politicians remain skeptical about freedom of assembly in Belarus, the independence of the Belarusian judicial system, judicial sector reform and the possibility of a moratorium on the death penalty.
“We have put forward a proposal so that all parties can cooperate on these issues,” Gabriel stressed.
The foreign minister also expressed hope that Belarus could potentially become a member of the Council of Europe.
“We want to take these steps together with Belarus and we are sure that these proposals will fall on fruitful ground,” Gabriel concluded.
