Portuguese Antonio Silva was responsible for both of his team’s goals. For the first goal, he passed the ball directly to Mikautadze, who passed it to Kvaratskhelia, who opened the scoring in the 93rd second. The Portuguese defender then made a clumsy intervention and was fouled in the penalty area, allowing Mikautadze to take the penalty in the 57th minute.

Portugal created several chances but Cristiano Ronaldo had a first-half free-kick blocked by goalkeeper Giorgio Mamardashvili and fired past a falling Ghulam Kashya from close range immediately after the break.

Georgia’s resolute defence and quick counterattacks were thoroughly deserved, meaning they advance to the last 16 as third in Group F to face Spain, while Portugal, who have already secured top spot in the group, will face Slovenia.

Georgia’s victory also means that Hungary failed to qualify as the third place in Group A.
