The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved a grant of $22.66 million for the Tonga Coastal Resilience Project, with the government providing another $1.2 million and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) providing $63,000.
The project aims to strengthen the long-term adaptive capacity of vulnerable coastal communities in Tonga to climate change. The project is led by the Climate Change Division of the Tongan Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) and supported by the United Nations Development Programme.
“There is an urgent need to build the resilience of Tonga’s coastal communities to the adverse effects of climate change, including sea level rise, coastal flooding and erosion,” said Sione ‘Akauola, CEO of MEIDECC.
“The project will develop clear strategies that combine science, infrastructure and community consultation to protect communities from sea level rise and marine hazards,” added Monctua Atangele, Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme in the Pacific.
The project will begin in 2025 and will focus on both immediate coastal protection and long-term adaptation planning.
