Libreville, Thursday, August 15, 2024 (Gabon News) – The Gabonese Head of State attended on Thursday morning, August 15, the ceremony in Toulon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Provence landings.
Several African heads of state attended on Thursday the Provence Landings, a military operation carried out by Allied forces on August 15, 1944, in southeastern France (between Toulon and Cannes) to defeat the Nazis during World War II.
Among these distinguished guests of French President Emmanuel Macron, General Brice Clotaire Origi Nguema, the transitional President of Gabon, who has led Gabon since August 30, 2023, maintains close relations with France around cooperation, which has recently developed taking into account the values embodied by both countries, mutual respect and the development of the world.
Today, they appeared in Provence with the French head of state to pay tribute to the 350,000 soldiers who landed in the city, including several African heroes who risked their lives to fight for France. “They are not of the same generation. Their beliefs are not the same. Their situations are not the same. Yet, they are the army of the nation,” Emmanuel Macron said in a message carried by French media.
Cameroonian President Paul Biya, speaking on behalf of African heads of state, recalled the origins of the historical facts of these heroic warriors, the context of the two world wars that shook the entire planet, and then the present and future of our world. This painful past of Africans fighting side by side with France must serve as a lesson and avoid certain excesses that he specifically listed.
These include “the specter of vengeful spirits, gross violations of national sovereignty, intolerable disregard for past peoples improvised in our daily lives, different interpretations of international law, injustice, crises of confidence, exploitation of human rights, terrorism, challenges of oblivion or other wars, the everlasting desire to dominate, exploit, and construct a world for their own sole benefit”.
Hearing that there are so many evils that must be eradicated, especially at a time when war is once again knocking at Europe’s door, alluding to the Russian-Ukraine conflict. Don’t forget the “war now being fought by proxy.”
For the Cameroonian head of state, the conference is the perfect opportunity to emphasize the collective responsibility to prevent peace and freedom and build a safer world, as he promotes dialogue and peaceful solutions in his country “which are key to its efforts to stop wars and conflicts.”
Finally, Paul Biya called on all countries to unite and jointly solve major contemporary problems.
