In 2022, the population of French Polynesia was 279,000. Over the past five years, the population has grown by 570 people per year, a rate that has slowed over the past 20 years. With the exception of Australes and the Tuamotu, the population of all archipelagos has increased, with rural areas of Tahiti experiencing a faster rate of growth.
The excess of births over deaths remains the only driver of population growth, but this is declining due to falling fertility rates. More people are leaving French Polynesia than arriving: notably, one in five young people aged 18 to 25 has left the region in the past five years.
The average number of people per household continues to decrease: 3.3 in 2022, down from 3.5 in 2017.
Employment has risen by three percentage points over the five-year period, and the share of Polynesian Natives in executive positions has risen by six percentage points. Employment in the construction industry is rising, driven by continued tourism activity and new housing construction. In particular, the number of second homes has increased by 37% over the five-year period.
