The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) marks its 45th anniversary on Friday 9 August, celebrating decades of regional collaboration on sustainable tuna fisheries management in the Pacific.

The theme for the anniversary was “Our People, Our Fisheries, Our Future: Celebrating 45 Years of Partnership.” FFA Director General Dr. Manu Tupou-Roosen highlighted the agency’s achievements, recalling the vision of Pacific Forum leaders in establishing FFA.

“Today is a special day for the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency. Forty-five years ago today, our founding instrument, the FFA Convention, came into force, fulfilling the vision of Pacific Forum leaders in establishing the FFA,” said Dr. Tupou-Rosen.

Reflecting on the progress made by the agency, Dr. Tupou-Rosen stressed that FFA’s success in maximizing the benefits of tuna fisheries for Pacific communities has exceeded the expectations of its founders.

She added: “We stand by that commitment and look back with pride at FFA’s growth, our shared achievements, and the incredible progress we have made together.”

Established on August 9, 1979, the Forum Fisheries Agency has become the main fisheries advisory body for the region’s 17 member countries, with a mission to strengthen national capacities and support regional cooperation.
