French President Emmanuel Macron announced in the evening via X that the two air force pilots who went missing after two Rafale multi-role fighter jets collided in the air in eastern France on Wednesday have died.

“We learned with sadness that Squadron Leader Sébastien Mabire and Lieutenant Colonel Matisse Laurent died in a plane crash during a Rafale training flight,” the French head of state said.

An intensive investigation is underway in the Colombi le Belle (Lorraine) region following the collision of the two fighter jets. The third pilot, who was at the controls of the other aircraft, managed to deploy his ejection seat and was not injured.
