More than 140 cyberattacks were reported during the Paris Olympics, but none disrupted the proceedings, French authorities said Tuesday. In the run-up to and during the Games, French cybersecurity agencies have been on high alert for attacks that could disrupt organizing committees, ticketing or transportation. Between July 26 and August 11, government cybersecurity agency Anssi recorded 119 reports of “security incidents” of relatively minor impact and 22 instances of “malicious actors” successfully attacking victims’ information systems. The agency said the attacks were mainly aimed at government entities as well as sports, transportation and telecommunications infrastructure.
A third of those were downtime incidents, and half were caused by denial-of-service attacks designed to overwhelm servers, according to Anthy.
Other cyber incidents are related to attempted or actual intrusions, data breaches, etc.
Anzai said: “All cyber incidents that occurred during this period had a relatively small impact overall.”
Anthy said the Grand Palais, which hosted the Paris Olympics, and about 40 other museums in France were hit by a ransomware attack in early August, but that it did not affect any information systems related to the Olympics.
Ransomware exploits security vulnerabilities to encrypt and block computer systems, demanding a ransom from the user or organization to unlock them.
At the pandemic-delayed 2021 Tokyo Olympics, organizers reported 450 million such surgeries, double the number at the 2012 London Games.
On the eve of the Paris Olympics, Marie-Rose Bruneau, director of technology and information systems at the Paris Olympics, said that this year’s Olympics was expected to suffer “eight to ten times more” cyber attacks than the Tokyo Olympics.
