On Sunday, August 4, a driver found former Belize City Councilman Deannie Requena with stab wounds to her face near Mile 15 on the George Price Highway.
According to preliminary reports, the driver found Requena near the police station at the entrance to Hattyville around 1:30 p.m. with stab wounds to her forehead, shoulder and back.
Requena was reportedly returning from Belize Central Prison, where she was visiting her boyfriend, Jovan Clare, when her car was hit by a Toyota 4Runner at mile marker 15. The passenger in the car was Jovan Clare’s brother, Burton Clare.
When the two vehicles pulled up, Claire accused Requena of being the reason his brother was in jail and began beating her. After the argument ended, a passerby found her lying on the side of the road with bruises and rushed Requena to Carl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Requena recounted the incident on social media, saying: “I am mostly OK physically, but what happened has taken a toll on me mentally.”
“I want to tell you that these men were no strangers to me… One of them stabbed me and beat me, another one smashed multiple windows on my car, slashed the tires, and stole $3,000 in cash from my wallet and iPhone. There were people who pointed weapons at me, and I want the public to know that,” she added.
According to Requena, all four of her tires were punctured.
Reckner’s account of the sequence of events was confirmed by Police Chief Chester Williams.
Police Commissioner Williams said Requena has filed a report with police.
The men are expected to be charged with the crime sometime today.
