Kathmandu, June 27. Liverpool and Uruguay striker Darbin Nunez clashes with fans.
Nunez got into an argument with fans after Uruguay lost to Colombia in the 2024 Copa America on Thursday morning.
After the final whistle, striker Nunez had a physical conflict with Colombian fans.
According to Uruguayan media El Paes, the clash took place near friends and family of the Uruguayan team. Nunez has yet to comment on the incident.
Television cameras and fans captured Nunes climbing up the railing of the packed stands at U.S. Bank Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Other Uruguayan players were also allegedly involved in the incident.
Uruguay captain Jose Maria Jimenez said the players would protect their families. “There are no police so we have to protect our families,” Jimenez said. “It was the fault of two or three people who drank too much. People who didn’t know how to drink.
After the game, Nunez was seen hugging his son on the court.
Reuters wrote that what emerged among the crowd was a disaster.
South American football’s governing body, CONMEBOL, condemned the incident and said it would launch an investigation. “There is no place for intolerance and violence on or off the pitch,” CONMEBOL said.
The tournament began after failing to reach the final following a 0-1 loss to Colombia in the semi-finals.
