The 17th round of the TOPsport A-League ended in Vilnius, with Žalgiris defeating the champions Panevėžis at home. After a hard-fought battle, Vladimir Cheburin’s army won 2:1 (1:0).
The first half was fairly open, with Vilnius taking the lead. Liviu Antalis hit the post from a good position, while Adama Fofana fired wide.
In the 19th minute, the “Zalgiris” took the lead: Mutaqi took advantage of the space on the right and crossed into the penalty area, and Paulius Golubicas sent the ball into the goal. Soon after, the midfielder could enjoy a double, but Danielis Bukelis, who made his debut in the TOPsport A-League, played successfully.
D. Bukelis also saved A. Fofana’s shot, while Žalgiris’ two shots flew close to the goal. “Panevežys” made several dangerous incursions into the penalty area, but did not seriously threaten Arpad Toldeis.
In the second half, the team created fewer threats. Sivert Gucias, who replaced the injured Noel Mbo, hit Todai, while Gorubica’s goal was ruled out for offside. Joel Bopesu failed to capitalize on a chance in the 83rd minute, while on the other side of the field, Federico Palacios also failed to take advantage of the moment that Panevěž would have appreciated the most.
In stoppage time, the goal fell: J. Bopesu, who scored his seventh goal this year, scored on a counterattack after a pass from P. Gorubica, but Nemanja Bosanciucius, who came on after the substitution, softened the score after a few minutes.
