According to the Finnish Professional Boxing Association (SAN), Helenius will not be eligible to fight again until September 2025 at the earliest. The ban covers professional boxing and participation in any combat sports, including exhibitions.
The association noted that the ban was consistent with previous doping sanctions imposed by Finland.
“The Finnish Boxing Association believes that Robert Helenis has presented credible evidence that the banned substances found in his sample entered his system unintentionally and without his knowledge,” the Finnish Boxing Association said in a statement.
Helenius denies doping
There is currently no international body responsible for overseeing doping in professional boxing. The SAN, which licenses Helennes to fight, adheres to the European Boxing Union (EBU) protocol – a ban imposed by one member state applies to all.
Helenius told IL that he still denied doping but accepted the verdict.
“Yes, I deny that with all my heart. While it is difficult to accept that a suspension had to be imposed, I have to say that I understand the decision because some form of sanction was needed. Otherwise, anyone can claim that the positive result came from somewhere else,” Helenis said
Elenius, 40, is currently recovering from neck surgery and does not want to make a final decision on the future of his boxing career.
“I have to see how I feel when I start the first phase of intensive training. I am optimistic and hope that my career can continue,” he said.
Helenis has won several regional heavyweight championships, including two European championships (2011-2016).
UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and the Finnish Professional Boxing Association (SAN) are still to make a decision on the Finnish heavyweight boxer’s ban.
