Children and teenagers are seen everywhere entertaining themselves with their phones. This means that these screens are winning the battle. Reading is taking second place or on another level. What is worrying is that in this postmodern society we see more and more people reading lazily, not for reading, but for entertaining themselves in the world of social networks or other trivialities. Everyone is looking for likes or follow notifications.

Regarding screens, researcher Michel Desmurguet mentions that “screens have an impact on the humanity of our children and ourselves, in general, they make us less human, they have a very negative impact on our intelligence in the intellectual sense, as we say in language, our knowledge and our ability to concentrate.” From this, it can be seen that language is reduced.

These screens have many negative consequences, such as poor concentration, children and teenagers are no longer sociable, etc.; therefore, parents should monitor what their children watch, or in short, limit their use of mobile phones. In some cases, screens help learning by understanding how to use them in teaching. However, they spend a lot of time connected. They no longer read.

It has been proven that when students use their phones to entertain themselves while the teacher is explaining a topic, academic performance decreases. Students no longer reason, they do not know how to interpret reading or dictation. Studies show that the more they are connected to the screen, the less vocabulary they have. In addition, students lose the ability to write documents, letters, essays, etc. For children over two years old, they are already addicted and they spend their time swiping the screen with their little fingers in search of entertainment.

It is appropriate that schools and universities regulate the use of any device that distracts from the teaching process, especially in the classroom. It is proven that when someone is interacting on the Internet, learning is put on hold. I hope it is studying a subject. It is proven that El Salvador has negative results in tests in different areas such as knowledge, reading and mathematics. Do parents pay attention to the time their children waste in front of the screen? Do teachers cooperate in limiting the use of mobile phones in educational centers?

When I and some classmates finished my graduate thesis and received my bachelor’s degree, we focused on the impact of media, especially pornographic and violent programs on TV. It was then that we realized that these programs are harmful, especially for children. When there was only TV, we spent 5 hours or more in front of the screen. Nowadays, people have more time to waste on social networks, video games and other distractions.

Other negative effects of screen use include: children not being social, obesity, attention span and cognitive processing, etc. Screens are addictive and children and young people get angry when they don’t have access to them. So, less screens and more books.

In terms of reading, the more you read, the more you gain in language, the more your emotional intelligence increases. These are all benefits when we read, when we focus on reading that contributes to our broader cultural heritage. The more you read, the stronger your reasoning, literacy and reading comprehension skills become. It is important that every school has a small library; ideally, a book club should be established. The mission is to encourage the importance of reading.

It is proven that by reading books, people become smarter. Currently it can be read on various platforms or ways, not just physical books. Feeding knowledge every day is relevant. It is very important to let more babies and teenagers learn through books. The idea is to encourage children to read at home. Parents should read stories, legends, fables, and other interesting readings to their children.

Teachers, regardless of their education level, must supervise the use of mobile phones in the classroom. It is scientifically proven that the use of television, video games and social networks interferes with concentration. In short, the more we read, the language, vocabulary and intelligence increase; and the more time we spend on screens, the less language and attention skills we acquire. It is important to take away children’s mobile phones, and that is enough. It is better to provide them with a book.
