The family of former Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima has made an emotional appeal to stop false reports of his death.
Speaking at a memorial service in Nchewu district, family representative Joshua Varela called on Malawians to prioritize patriotism and national development instead of spreading misinformation.
Mr Varela described the false reports as “heartbreaking” and “distressing” for the victims’ families, who are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones.
Chilima died in a military plane crash in June along with eight others.
His death sparked grief across the country.
Traditional leader Inkosi Ya Makosi Gomani V also spoke at the ceremony, calling on people to maintain peace and unity despite adversity.
The family’s appeal comes as Malawi struggles to curb the spread of fake news, which has fuelled tensions in the country.
