However, Bates’ theory is premised on the fact that the eye changes shape during movement and focusing. It is physiologically wrong.

A 2018 study in the International Yoga Journal compared visual acuity (the smallest print you can see) and refractive error (the prescription for your glasses) in groups who practiced the Bates exercise, or “trakat,” for eight weeks.

The conclusion of the study is None of the exercises had any effect on refractive error or visual acuity.

The Bates method has been rejected by ophthalmologists not only because of a lack of evidence, but also because it may be harmful and promote “solarization” (staring at the sun), which is dangerous and overexposes the retina to the sun.
