A bomb inside a restaurant in the Somali capital of Mogadishu killed 32 civilians in an attack believed to have been carried out by the militant group al-Shabaab that targeted a popular area. The Somali government said more than 60 people were injured.
It was the deadliest attack of its kind since two simultaneous bombings in Mogadishu in October, when a bomb blast near a large market killed more than 100 people and injured more than 300.
Somali police spokesman Abdel Fattah Aden said one soldier was killed in the attack near a restaurant in the countryside. He said four al-Shabaab members were involved in the attack, one of whom committed suicide. Police attacked three others involved, killing two of them and arresting the third.
Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for previous attacks in Somalia but has not yet claimed responsibility for this one. Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Berri called an emergency meeting of the country’s security forces.
“The government will continue its efforts to eradicate terrorism. The aim of terrorists is to create fear in the minds of the public. We call on the public to share information about the fugitives,” the government said in a statement. However, the government has not confirmed that al-Shabaab was behind the attack.
The Somali army is battling al-Shabaab militants who control parts of the country. Some areas controlled by al-Shabaab have been liberated during military operations that began in 2022. However, the military has been unable to stop the group’s brutal attacks on the capital, Mogadishu.
