Yesterday, Microsoft released Exchange 2013 SP1. In addition to bug fixes, this version also brings some interesting new features. Some of these features stand out more than others.

S/MIME support in OWA
Finally, OWA will support S/MIME encryption. This is a much needed and sorely missing feature in Exchange 2010. For me, this is an absolute requirement for any Exchange client I use. Awesome!

AD FS claims to support OWA
This means that OWA will support claims based authentication. This was possible in 2010, but I don’t think it was a supported configuration.

MAPI over HTTP
A new protocol has been released that looks like it will become the default for Outlook. You may remember MAPI from older versions of Exchange, but it could not be transported using HTTP. The only way to use HTTP was to use Outlook anywhere that used RPC over HTTP. In Exchange 2013, the Outlook client dropped MAPI in favor of RPC over HTTP. I look forward to studying this new protocol.
