In this year’s European Championship, which went to a penalty shootout for the first time – Portugal’s match against Slovenia was goalless after 120 minutes, so the winner was decided on penalties – the Portuguese performed better and advanced to the quarter-finals.

Portugal took the initiative from the start but was still far from the goal.

They first threatened through Ruben Dijaš, who fired a shot just inside the box towards Oblak’s second post but it went wide.

Ronaldo also had a shot in the first half, first with a header and then from a free kick, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s shot went just over the bar.

On the other side, Slovenia launched a dangerous attack on the right. Stojanovic’s pass was intercepted by Mendes, followed by Mlacar’s breakthrough and Sheshek’s shot from about 25 meters, which finally fell to Kosto.

Portugal continued to dominate in the second half, with Roberto Martinez’s side swarming the Slovenian goal, but they managed to defend it thanks to goalkeeper Oblak.

In the 62nd minute, Slovenia had a great chance when Cesco got rid of Pepe and broke into the penalty area, but seemed to lose his strength and his shot went wide.

At the end of regulation, Ronaldo had a chance to shoot but he fired straight at Oblak.

It was almost a lullaby in the first extra-time, until the very end, when Zota was brought down in the Slovenia penalty area and Osato pointed to the penalty spot, Ronaldo took the responsibility and shot wide, or rather, Oblak robbed him of his shot.

In the second extra time, Slovenia came even closer – in the 115th minute, thanks to an incredible error from Cesco – he was alone in front of the Portugal goalkeeper and shot very poorly.

In the penalty shootout, Ilicic immediately missed his first chance and Ronaldo then got the ball again, this time scoring his first goal of the series.

And in the second series, Slovenia-Balkovic’s defeat was stopped by Kosta. Bruno Fernandes won 2:0.

Koshta also stopped Verbic in the third series before Bernardo Silva sealed the win and a place in the quarterfinals, where France awaited them.
