A group of Azimio leaders has challenged the judiciary to oppose what they say are plans to reintroduce the rejected 2024 Finance Bill.
DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa joined other leaders in accusing President William Ruto of trying to reintroduce the controversial bill that had previously sparked protests across the country.
“Fellow Kenyans, we cannot let our guard down. He has threatened to reintroduce the finance bill; he has made it clear that new taxes will return. All Kenyans should unite to stop the new taxes that are about to be implemented.” Malva said.
Wamalwa also criticised President Ruto for weakening the opposition by recruiting key members into his broad national unity government, a move he claimed was aimed at silencing and weakening the opposition voice.
Wamalwa said the strategy is aimed at neutralizing criticism of Kenya’s Kwanza government, consolidating more power in the government and facilitating the passage of new laws in parliament, including additional tax measures.
“In any democracy, if there is no strong opposition, there will be a dictatorship and William Ruto is such a person. He is not a democrat and that is why he is creating a tyranny of numbers. With the support they have now through the broad government, these taxes will pass parliament,” He said.
Despite key members of the Azimio joining Ruto’s cabinet in various roles, Wamalwa vowed that the Azimio coalition would continue to fight for the Kenyan people while the opposition was in power.
“We in Azimio who have chosen not to be part of this government and continue to oppose it will stand with the people. We are not part of the Ruto government and this is our position.” Malva added.
