EU defense ministers agreed at an informal meeting on Friday, August 30, to increase the number of Ukrainian military personnel who will be trained as part of the EUMAM mission. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell told a press conference.

He mentioned the achievements of EUMAM, which, in his words, is “the most successful training mission ever organized by the EU.” He confirmed that 60,000 Ukrainians have been trained within the framework.

“Today, ministers agreed to increase this target to 75,000 people, and to add another 15,000 by the end of the year,” Josep Borrell was quoted as saying in the media.

The top EU diplomat said Ukrainian military training would be tailored to battlefield conditions and would be carried out in coordination with Kiev.

“To this end, I proposed to set up a small communications coordination centre in Kyiv, which the member states agreed to. This will allow us to coordinate directly with other relevant actors (in the training process),” Borrell explained.

The EUMAM mission was established in October 2022 to help train Ukrainian military personnel. Its mandate is currently scheduled to last until November 2024, but is expected to be extended in July.

Within the EUMAM framework, the exercises are mainly held in Poland and Germany, but according to media reports, the EU is discussing moving some of the training to Ukraine.
