Environment Canterbury is warning people not to kayak or collect food in Christchurch rivers following a massive diesel spill.
An ECan spokesman said they responded to the spill near the Woolston Tannery at around 11.10am on Tuesday.
About 100 litres of diesel was released onto the ground, “some of which” flowed into the Heathcote River.
The spokesman said the rainbow sheen was visible in the area near the corner of Rutherford Street and Garlands Road.
The luster is still visible at least 200 meters downstream
“We are assisting with the clean-up, including deploying absorbent booms around stormwater outfalls.
“We advise people to avoid kayaking or collecting Masingakay within the entire ‘loop’ of the river until further notice.
“So far, there have been no reports of wildlife being affected.
“We will continue to monitor the site.”
