The European Union has allocated €200,000 (DM 4 million in humanitarian funding to assist the most vulnerable people affected by last season’s drought.
According to a statement issued by the EU delegation in Maseru last week,EgyptThe funds will support the Lesotho Red Cross Society in providing much-needed assistance to more than 2,500 families in the four worst-affected districts: Maseru, Mohaleshoek, Gachasneke and Guting.

The Red Cross will also launch an awareness campaign to educate the community on water treatment technologies and effective water management practices.
The funding forms part of the EU’s overall contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ (IFRC) Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF).
“In two consecutive seasons, 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, Lesotho suffered severe climate shocks, including hail, pests and heavy rainfall in large parts of the country. Heavy rainfall in late December 2023 and early 2024 led to waterlogging in fields, resulting in reduced crop production,” the EU added.
“Subsequently, unusually high temperatures between January and March 2024 led to widespread crop failures and exacerbated crop failures in the previous two seasons. The cumulative impact of these shocks has led to higher food prices, with about 41% of rural households spending more than half of their income on food. Eight out of Lesotho’s ten regions are in a state of food security crisis, meaning that families here have difficulty finding food.”
