The EU wants to improve diplomatic relations with Vietnam, EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi on Tuesday, adding that the bloc could help Vietnam strengthen its maritime and cybersecurity capabilities. Borrell discussed issues including the South China Sea, Ukraine and energy transition financing with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son during a meeting in Hanoi.
“I hope my visit will be the beginning of improving our relations,” Borrell said after the meeting.
He noted that the EU supports respect for international law on the South China Sea and Ukraine, where some EU member states believe Vietnam’s stance on the war in Ukraine is too close to Russia’s.
Borrell also called on Vietnam to accelerate the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to reduce coal use in the Southeast Asian country, which is also an industrial hub. Minister Son said he requested financial support from the EU for the implementation of the JETP. He also welcomed a more active EU role in the Indo-Pacific region.
