The Estonian government announced on Thursday that it has begun comprehensive border controls on its border with Russia. So far, Estonian authorities have only carried out routine border checks.

Thursday’s decision to impose comprehensive border controls at the land and rail crossing points of Narva, Koidula and Luhama came into effect immediately.

For people crossing the border on foot, full control means checking people and their luggage. People travelling by car will have their cars and their contents checked.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristian Michal said the decision was made to prevent goods subject to EU sanctions from being transported and transiting through Estonia.

Estonia, a former Soviet republic, is now Ukraine’s main supporter in its fight against Russian occupiers.

Finland and Estonia’s borders with Russia are external borders of the European Union and NATO.

The EU has imposed 14 sanctions on Russia since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

These include economic measures, such as restrictions on imports and exports, which affect every sector in Russia – from energy, banking, industry and transport, to a ban on Russian state media working in the EU.
