New Energy and Petroleum Minister Opiyo Wandayi, who officially took office on Wednesday, said he would prioritize reducing the cost of electricity.
He acknowledged the challenges ahead and stressed that his first goal is to make electricity more affordable, which he believes is essential but a burden for most Kenyans.
In his inauguration speech as successor to Davis Chirchir (now transferred to the Ministry of Roads and Transport), Wandayi promised to work closely with all stakeholders to streamline the energy sector. He plans to work extensively with Kenya Power to reduce system losses from 23% to a target of 15%.
“Once we do that, I believe over time the cost of electricity will be affordable, and we also have to understand that the cost of electricity and petroleum products is caused by many factors.” Wandayi said.
The CS also introduced a new approach to problem solving that is designed to benefit employees, stakeholders and consumers alike. He stressed that transparency will be a cornerstone in his efforts to provide affordable, sustainable, clean and reliable energy services.
“We want to inculcate a culture and spirit of openness and transparency in the management of departmental affairs. We want to restore departmental affairs to their previous state of serving the people.” Wandayi said.
He also stressed the importance of public participation in the department’s operations and building trust. To this end, Wandayi announced the launch of a bimonthly “Consumer CS Roundtable” to facilitate regular interactions and collect public feedback.
Additionally, CS Wandayi plans to enhance communication within the ministry to ensure the public is kept updated on the latest developments.
