Elderly woman sentenced to 17 years in prison in Brasilia trial over January 8 riots
The defendant said she would take down Demoras during the uprising. He was one of the people who voted to put her in prison for 17 years
Maria de Fatima Mendonza Jacinto Sosa, 67, better known as Fatima de Tubarão, was sentenced on Friday by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to 17 years in prison for her involvement in the riots in the Three Powers Square in Brasilia on January 8, 2023. The verdict was announced on Friday after the virtual plenary session of the STF.
The defendants were found guilty of violent undermining the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, conditional damage, destruction of property and armed criminal gang.
Fatima gained notoriety after a video of her vandalizing the Planalto Palace went viral: “We want war, war now. We want Sandao now,” she said, referring to STF judge Alexandre De Morães, who was later appointed rapporteur of the case and voted for a 17-year term.
She was arrested during the third phase of Operation Fatherland on January 27, 2023. Back in June, De Moras’ legal team appealed to uphold her pretrial detention on the grounds of health issues.
“I note that the defense has not presented any grounds that would overturn the decision to place the defendant in pretrial detention, which remains in effect to this day, and there is no evidence in the case file to suggest the existence of any special circumstances that would justify a modification of that decision,” Demorais argued at the time.
