Edwards sends strong message at Road Tennis Open

EgyptMar Edwards declared his desire to win the title with an easy win over Raheem Nurse in the round of 64 of the Barbados Road Open at Silverhill on Saturday.

Edwards was a rising star in the sport, showing impressive movement and ball striking ability, but it was his consistency that was the deciding factor. He dominated the first set, shutting down Nurse 21-9. Edwards continued to control the match, eventually winning the second set 21-11. His ability to cover the court with ease and hit winners made many onlookers wonder if he could be the eventual champion.

The day’s competition was interrupted by rain, but when the competition resumed, Edwin Ward staged a great comeback and defeated Brommell Griffith 14-21, 21-14, 21-17. Adrian Scott was in excellent form and easily defeated Rommell Forde 21-9, 21-7, while Dwayne Lynch easily defeated Ryan Jordan 21-8, 21-14. Antonio Yearwood also defeated Marcellus Gustave 21-14, 21-17 to advance to the next round.

Kurt Alleyne staged a stunning comeback to defeat Trevor Ifill 17-21, 21-15, 21-18. Alleyne celebrated excitedly after the match and then boldly announced that he would defeat top seed Mark “Venom” Griffith.

In another upset, Brandon Arundel defeated promising left-hander Ezekiel Ward in two straight sets, 21-18 and 25-23.

Some of the tournament’s top players Mark Griffith, Shakeem Nurse and Darius Gaskin participated.

Earlier this week at Diamond Point, veteran Dayton “Pa” Roach made a splash with a comeback win over Christopher Rene, 15-21, 22-20, 21-19, and Dwayne Hope also had a hard-fought win over Leon Carter, 21-13, 14-21, 21-18.
