We will vote on Sunday, June 9, and let us add this at the end! It is known that the legislature will end in 2024, given that the vote was held in 2019, but this slow closure will last for more than a year, which is neither predictable nor desirable. Now the protagonists themselves have acknowledged this at every opportunity, recognizing the difficulty of advancing reforms in an increasingly agitated atmosphere, even though on paper there are still enough numbers to legislate at full speed.
So we are finally going to vote. This phase of gridlock, which lasted much longer than a normal government, is over.
The results will be announced on Monday and the parties will be able to “count each other’s numbers” and “weigh the odds”. In fact, if there is no winner who can maintain a majority in the Grand Council, a consultation phase will begin, the aim of which is to form a heterogeneous majority (compared to the one formed in the first round) and avoid a second round of voting. One could say, but also to avoid wasting more time. Because, in the final analysis, the country is more interested in getting things done than in arguments and blame-shifting. And this will be done soon.
Voting is not a waste of time, but politics must also not feel that way in order to show respect for this democratic tool and to do our best to provide the country not only with a new government, but most importantly with solutions to the many demands coming from citizens and businesses.
Let’s start working from Monday because there is a lot to do and they have no more excuses.
