The Dubai government has decided to introduce an automated system to catch those who ride on buses without paying the fare. The automated system will work based on the number of passengers. In particular, those who get off the bus with their eyes covered in order to save a few dirhams will have to pay a fine of Dh200 if caught.
Buses operating in Dubai will soon be equipped with an automatic passenger counting system. Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has completed preparations for this. The system will verify receipts based on the number of passengers.
Currently, passengers on Dubai government-run buses use their own swipe cards. Some passengers board the bus without swiping their cards. Now, any such behavior will be subject to a Dh200 fine.
636 new buses will be fitted with passenger counting systems this year and next. They have 40 electric buses. 146 double-decker buses are operating for densely populated areas. This includes 450 city service buses.
Under the passenger counting system, passengers can be quickly identified without swiping their cards. Through this system, not only those who travel for free can be caught, but the Road and Traffic Authority can also know how many buses should be running in which areas of the city at a particular time.
Last year, 1,193 passengers were found not to have paid their fares during Apel’s six-day inspection campaign. Saeed Al Balushi, director of the monitoring department at the Roads and Transport Authority, told Khaleej Times that the RTA conducts several inspections throughout the year to catch those who fail to pay their fares.
Dubai RTA operates 1,518 buses. The city has 119 internal routes and 35 routes connecting roads and metro stations. 12 routes connect Dubai with other cities. Dubai’s bus system covers 82% of the area. 3.07 million people ride these buses every day.
