Xylazine, also known as the zombie drug, is wreaking havoc in the United States. Besides that, it has spread to other countries, especially in Africa. In Mali, cannabis is the most consumed drug in the country, according to experts, but this zombie drug also has some supporters, as several young drug users who spoke to us anonymously attest.
Despite the increase in consumption in the country, the authorities do not seem too vigilant. During our investigation, several young drug users confirmed the presence of the zombie drug in our home. A young man met Bagadagi in the second commune of the Bamako district and claimed to have eaten it.
I used to smoke marijuana. Many of us had tried it. One day, a friend suggested that each of us donate money so that we could buy a new narcotic, the name of which he himself did not know. And it was really strong. Others were reluctant to contribute. On the other hand, I also donated my share of money. When he brought it to me and asked me to inject it, after a few minutes it was as if my body was paralyzed. I was shaking until I could hardly go home, our interlocutor testified anonymously, and then added: the dose was so strong that he fainted.
Another young user who lives in the second commune of the Bamako district and is also addicted, expresses regret. But the alcohol seems to have run out. You can’t imagine what the lack will bring. I’m very sorry, but what to do today? The desire to consume may lead you to obtain money through deception or theft. “We are ready to commit all kinds of crimes to be able to get a fix,” he explains, his voice full of pain. But according to his explanation, at the beginning it was to escape from life and forget the troubles of life: I got a taste of taking zombie drugs through a friend.
The drug, known as Tranq or by its scientific name Xylazine, is used in veterinary medicine as a pain reliever for horses and increases the effects of heroin, which is starting to wreak havoc on teenagers and is a threat to humans.
Zombie originates from Haitian culture and is also used to describe victims of witchcraft spells that can resurrect the dead or destroy a person’s consciousness and make him or her do hard labor. The word “zombie” means “spirit” or “ghost” in the Krol language.
Xylazine has been used as a sedative for horses since the 1970s and is said to be 100 times more powerful than morphine. It is now enjoying a new career as unscrupulous dealers distribute it to the most vulnerable populations. Its short-term effects are comparable to other sedatives, such as a slowed heart rate, loss of control, brain damage and even death.
It is often mixed with fentanyl, a destructive opiate that was responsible for the death of singer Michael Jackson. This devastating cocktail damages the nervous system to the point where addicts find themselves unable to control their minds. Repeated use can increase blood pressure and reduce oxygenation in the skin.
Xylazine, a zombie drug, is said to cause wounds and skin to be torn like a zombie. Those who take it walk like zombies. The back is bent, the arms swing, and the head is lowered to the ground.
