Based in Zagreb, Štambuk specializes in internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology. With Croatian independence, he switched to a diplomatic career in independent Croatia.
He was the first authorized diplomatic representative of the Republic of Croatia to the United Kingdom, a globally important and influential country, during the sensitive period from 1991 to 1994. From 1995 to 1998, he served as Ambassador to India and Sri Lanka, from 1998 to 2000 to Egypt and several Arab countries, from 2005 to 2010 to Japan and South Korea, in 2011 to Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, and in 2019 to Iran.
He has published more than 70 books of poetry, anthologies, translations, language dictionaries and collections of prose. He is a poet of the world and his homeland. He is considered one of the most important contemporary Croatian poets and the writer with the most open and sophisticated works.
In 1991, he founded the famous all-Croatian language poetry review “Croatian rediviva ča-kaj-što” in his hometown of Serč, which treats Čakava, Kajkava and Stočava poets equally. This form of “cha-kaj-što” is based on the idea of Croatian trinity and communalization, and the founder named it “the golden formula of Croatian cha-kaj-što”.
He is known for his persistent work in translating medical terms into Croatian, i.e. creating Croatian names for medical terms, which until then had only used loanwords in Croatian.
Among his famous expressions, it is worth mentioning the newly created land (for AIDS/AIDS), pacemaker (for pacemaker) and dilator or vascular support (for stent).
“The times are very critical, our civilization is in decline. If one day slaves come to rule the world, poetry will become the subversive language of human slaves,” Stambok said in a conversation with Jurica Gudelja, editor and host of the Bura podcast.
He said that today the survival of humanity is the top priority. He said that in order to achieve this goal, we must expand our minds. He believes that the consumer mentality is destroying the world today because people know the price of everything but the value of nothing. Stambok also talked about his experiences in countries in the Far East, South America and the Islamic world.
