televisionThe Seismological Research Center at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (SRC-UWI) said on Tuesday that the Dominican Republic is experiencing “volcanic seismic eruptions.”
In a statement published on its website, the SRC-UWI Facebook Page said that starting at 12:45 a.m. (local time) on Tuesday, “a series of volcanic earthquakes were reported in the northern part of the Dominican Republic.
“Some of these earthquakes were strong enough to be felt by humans, but were below the 3.5 magnitude threshold that is posted on the SRC’s social media platforms.”
The report said that so far, 345 earthquakes have been recorded in the sequence and the frequency of earthquakes has decreased.
It added: “The Seismological Research Center is continuing to monitor seismic activity and providing regular updates to the Dominican Disaster Management Office, ODM.”
Last week, the SRC-UWI said the Dominican Boiling Lake “is slowly replenishing its water levels, with water temperatures hovering between 70° and 80° Celsius”.
Boiling Lake is a volcanic hydrothermal feature located near the Valley of Desolation in southern Dominica, with a diameter of about 60 meters and a depth of about 15 meters.
Boiling Lake is the second largest lake in the world, the largest being Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand.
The University of the West Indies Water Research Centre said in a statement that water levels had changed significantly over the past few days, noting that “this phenomenon has occurred several times in the past, but the earliest record was in 1876.”
The report said that the last observed change in lake water levels was in March 2024. The lake level has dropped significantly and steam emissions from the main vent area are now more clearly visible.
