The Dominican government provided incentives worth more than $60,000 for the filming of Discovery Channel’s American Tarzan. American Tarzan is an endurance adventure show that premiered on July 6, 2016 at 10pm. Locally, Discovery Channel can be watched on Marpin 2K4 channel 19 and Digicel Play channel 55. A 40-member crew arrived in Dominica in March this year and spent eight weeks scouting and filming American Tarzan. The crew received assistance with getting equipment and supplies in and out, obtaining the necessary filming permits and licenses, and developing a medical evacuation plan if needed. Initial estimates show that the crew spent more than $300,000 on local goods and services on the island, contributing approximately $1 million in economic activity to the local economy. Dominica will receive extensive television coverage once the show premieres to millions of Discovery Channel viewers around the world, as well as through reruns of the episode. The Dominican series is the premiere series of American Tarzan and will see seven contestants traverse the Dominican Republic’s rugged terrain, completing various challenges to earn the title of “American Tarzan”. Colin Piper, Director of the Tourism Office, commented: “This series and the publicity opportunities it provides for the Dominican Republic are exactly what the Dominican Development Agency was hoping for when it developed, staged and distributed Nature Island Challenge; there is no doubt that American Tarzan and the Discovery Channel can now showcase the beauty and charm of the Dominican Republic to the world.” The Dominican Film Office has promoted initiatives to support filming in the Dominican Republic in line with the government’s goal of stimulating economic growth through the creative industries.
