Minister Suresh Gopi has called former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ‘Mother India’. The actor-turned-politician made the lotus bloom for the first time in Kerala. Gopi made these words in his parliamentary constituency Thrissur today to honour Indira Gandhi. In today’s DNA, Vishal Pandey analyses the BJP minister’s statement.

After making the statement, Suresh Gopi also said that such praise should not be viewed from a political perspective. He also praised the late Congress leader K. Karunakaran. In Thrissur constituency, Karunakaran’s son Muraleedharan is the Congress candidate and is ranked third.

The BJP leader also called Kanukalan and Marxist veteran EK Nayanar his “political mentors”. Gopi spoke to reporters after visiting Kanukalan’s memorial ‘Murali Mandiram’ in Punkunnam.
The BJP leader urged the media not to link his visit to Karunakaran’s memorial with politics, saying he had come here to pay respects to his ‘mentor.’ He said that just like Nayanar and his wife Saradha teacher, he was also close to Karunakaran and his wife Kalyanikutty Amma.

On June 12, he visited Nayanar’s home in Kannur and reestablished relations with the family. Gopi said he considers Indira Gandhi as the “Mother of India” and Karunakaran as the “Father of the Indian National Congress” in his mind.
He explained that calling Karunakaran the ‘father’ of the Kerala Congress was not disrespectful to the founder or co-founder of the ancient party in the southern state.

The actor-turned-politician also heaped praises on the Congress veteran’s administrative abilities and termed him a “brave administrator” of this generation.

2024 Lok Sabha elections

Interestingly, Suresh Gopi won the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, dashing the hopes of Karunakaran’s son and Congress leader K Muraleedharan, who had finished third in the triangular contest of the April 26 elections.
