Nurunnahar Khatun (19) got married just 11 days ago. After staying at her parents-in-law’s house for a week as per all wedding customs, she returned to her father’s house with her husband on Friday. Nurunnahar’s house was broken into on Saturday afternoon. The groom, Moncher Ali, 32, came to his father-in-law’s house to divorce his bride, Nurunahar, and return to his father-in-law’s house to marry his mother-in-law, Majeda Begum (40). The mother-in-law, Majeda, now works as Moncher Ali’s housekeeper. The sensational incident took place in Kariyatata village in Gopalpur upazila in Tangail.
It is understood that Munch Ali, son of Waheed Ali from the village of Hazrabari Purwapara in Danbari Upazila, married Noorunnahar Khatun, daughter of Noor Islam from the village of Karyata in Gopalpur Upazila on October 2. The day after the wedding, the mother-in-law Majda Begum came to her daughter’s house. After staying there with her daughter for a week, she returned home with her daughter and son-in-law last Friday.
On Saturday morning, the newlywed Nurunnaha solemnly stated that she would not marry Muncher. A family feud began. The mother-in-law, Majeda Begum, then said in front of everyone that if Nurunnaha’s family did not settle, she would start her new son-in-law’s family.
In response to Majeda Begum’s remarks, the helpless father-in-law Noor Islam called the village arbitration. Hadira Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Quader Talukder, UP member Nazrul Islam and dignitaries from the area attended the arbitration. Majeda Begum and Moncher Ali were beaten in social justice. After that, Noor Islam divorced his wife Majeda Begum with the consent of his family. Then the groom Moncher Ali divorced the bride Noorun Nahar.
Later, Majeda Begum married Moncher Ali and offered a dowry of Tk 100,000 in the same ceremony in front of everyone. The marriage was registered by Hadilah Union Nikah registrar Kazi Zeenat. He said that two talaqs and a wedding were performed in the same ceremony with the consent of UP chairperson member Gramya Matbar and all members of the family.
UP member Nazrul Islam said the entire work was done with the consent of the family. However, Muncher and Majida were physically punished in front of the villagers for opposing their marriage to their mother-in-law.
UP Chairman Abdul Quader Talukder said that after the news of the mother-in-law’s marriage came out, angry villagers surrounded the house and started fighting. After receiving the news, he rushed to the scene. After obtaining the consent of the whole family, he agreed to the marriage.
Meanwhile, many people flocked to Monche Ali’s house in the past two days due to the news of his mother-in-law’s marriage.
