Maldives Olympic Committee (MOC) president Mohammad Abdul Sattar (Champi) has said Sri Lankan table tennis star Fatima Deema Ali should be seen as a role model by other Sri Lankan athletes.

Speaking at a special award ceremony held by the Ministry of Culture to celebrate Dima’s achievements, Sattar said all athletes should follow Dima’s path and be determined to qualify. Sattar pointed out that everyone in the sport is united in support of Dima and that Dima will definitely win no matter how big the sea is.

Dima’s determination and courage are something we will never forget. What to implement next is the biggest question.

Sattar said the biggest secret to Dima’s success was the efforts of her parents and former Sports Minister Ahmed Makhlouf in providing her with opportunities. “Dima’s example is a lesson for all other athletes who should also understand what she has done to succeed,” he said.

There are a lot of association leaders here, so we have to say Dima, you are doing a great job. We have to tell you what happened. We need to set an example to other athletes.

Dima’s qualification for the Paris Olympics in France marks the first time in Sri Lankan sports history that a Dhivehi athlete has qualified for the world’s largest sporting event. Previously, Sri Lankan athletes had the opportunity to participate in the Olympics through invitational tournaments.
