On May 22, staff from the National Museums – Cultural Institutions’ Laboratory for the Restoration of Works of Art were in charge of returning a religious canvas to the sanctuary of Beata Vergine della Consolazione in Borgo Maggiore. Its splendor was the result of the hard work of restorer Graziella Venturini.
This canvas was probably used in ancient times as a processional banner to celebrate the glory of Mary, perfectly represented here by the Latin letters AM (Look at Mary – under the protection of Mary) in the mystical vision of the Revelation passage in John chapter. 12 -1 “And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”
In the lower part of the canvas, two adoring angels holding a scroll clearly indicate the commission of the work – the Society of the Most Holy Name of Our Lady of Consolation in Borgo Maggiore, indicated here by the term used until the end of this painting. suburb – Live near a city.
Until the restoration, the image, already extremely deteriorated, was hidden under a heavy veil of protection. Only after the restoration work began was it possible to determine that the image corresponded to the description of the canvas, which was taken over by the National Museum, other museums have restored and returned from the Diocese of Borgo Maggiore a few years ago.
Research on the 18th century deeds and minutes of the Congregation of the Holy Name of Mary preserved in the diocesan archives confirms the existence of the work since the first half of the 18th century.
It is with great joy and sincere gratitude that I express my gratitude for the difficult work of the parish priests of the Borgo, the representatives of the Compagnia della Beata Vergine della Consolazione, the owner of the canvas, Ms. Graziella Venturini and the Council of Cultural Institutions, returning to the parish on June 2, near the Feast of Our Lady of the Republic Compatrona, venerated in Borgo Maggiore as “Our Lady of Consolation”.
The canvas is on display in the sanctuary and will remain there throughout the celebrations.
