The Indian Navy’s frontline frigate INS Brahmaputra caught fire and tilted to one side, with a junior sailor missing. The Indian Navy said that due to the fire on the frigate INS Brahmaputra, the warship tilted severely to one side (port side) and despite all efforts, it could not be restored to an upright position.
The Indian Navy said: “The vessel continued to tilt along the berth and is currently on its side. All personnel, except a junior sailor, have been found and the search and rescue is still ongoing. The Indian Navy has ordered an investigation into the accident.”
The Indian Navy also said that the fire broke out last night. “On the evening of July 21, 2024, a fire broke out on the Indian Navy ship Brahmaputra (a multi-purpose frigate) during renovation. On the morning of July 22, 2024, the crew controlled the fire with the assistance of firefighters from the Mumbai Naval Dockyard and other ships in the port. In addition, follow-up actions, including disinfection inspections, were taken to assess the residual risks of the fire,” the Indian Navy said.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi informed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh about the fire on Indian Navy ship Brahmaputra and the damage caused by the incident.
The fire was first discovered by the ship’s duty officers while carrying out maintenance work last night. The ship’s fire brigade immediately launched a large-scale operation to control the fire and urgently mobilized reinforcements from the Navy Dockyard Fire Brigade and other nearby ships.
The Indian Navy has ordered an investigation into the accident and the cause of the fire. The specific cause of the fire is still unclear.
